Mining in Water Bodies is Illegal – Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah Declares During Vetting

Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, has strongly reiterated that mining in water bodies remains illegal and unacceptable under Ghanaian law. Speaking during his ministerial vetting in Parliament today, he vowed to enforce stringent measures to curb illegal mining activities that are devastating the nation’s water resources.

“It is illegal for anybody to do mining in water bodies,” Hon. Buah emphasized, adding that the practice not only violates laws but also poses severe environmental and health risks to communities dependent on these water sources.

The nominee outlined his commitment to adopting a zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.” He pledged to work closely with law enforcement agencies, local authorities, and traditional leaders to ensure strict compliance with regulations governing mining activities.

Hon. Buah also revealed plans to engage stakeholders to find sustainable solutions for small-scale miners, including alternative livelihood programs and environmentally friendly mining practices.

His statements have drawn widespread applause from members of Parliament and the general public, who see his firm stance as critical to tackling Ghana’s growing environmental challenges.
