The Concerned Youth of Esiama has defended Dr. George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, Board Chairman of PSC Tema Shipyard and Drydock Limited, following the resurfacing of allegations linked to the 2009 UK Mabey & Johnson bribery case.
In a press statement issued on May 12, 2026, the group described the renewed circulation of the allegations as a deliberate attempt to damage the reputation of the former Health Minister and undermine his current role at the Tema Shipyard.
According to the group, no Ghanaian court has found Dr. Sipa-Yankey guilty of any offence in relation to the matter.
They stated that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), after investigating the allegations years ago, cleared him of wrongdoing.
The statement further noted that Dr. Sipa-Yankey voluntarily resigned as Health Minister in 2009 to protect the Presidency from distraction while he sought to clear his name.
The group also stressed that the UK court proceedings were against Mabey & Johnson Ltd and not any Ghanaian individual, adding that no Ghanaian was placed on trial in the case.
Citing Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, the group maintained that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction.
Defending his appointment as Board Chairman of PSC Tema Shipyard and Drydock Limited in February 2026, the group said Dr. Sipa-Yankey was selected based on his experience, competence, and contributions to Ghana’s public sector.
They highlighted his role in the establishment of Ghana Gas, where he previously served as Chief Executive Officer, describing the institution as one of Ghana’s major economic assets.
According to the statement, the previous NPP administration conducted a forensic audit into the operations and finances of Ghana Gas after assuming office in 2017 but found no wrongdoing against Dr. Sipa-Yankey.
The group added that no corruption allegations were leveled against him throughout the eight-year tenure of the Akufo-Addo administration.
Touching on developments at the Tema Shipyard, the statement said ongoing rehabilitation works under Dr. Sipa-Yankey’s leadership include the restoration of Dock 1, equipment modernization, and workforce reforms aimed at transforming the facility into a leading maritime repair hub in West Africa.
The group urged the public to reject what it described as “recycled and unproven allegations” intended to derail efforts to revive the strategic national asset.
It also warned unnamed individuals allegedly behind the renewed attacks to desist from politicising the matter.
“Dr. Sipa-Yankey remains committed to serving Ghana with integrity and will not be distracted by recycled claims that have no standing in Ghanaian law,” the statement concluded.
