Ghana is set to engage African ambassadors in a high-level briefing as part of intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing growing concerns over xenophobic tensions in South Africa, following a viral video involving a Ghanaian national.
The development comes after Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, held discussions with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, over the disturbing footage, which appears to show a confrontation involving a Ghanaian resident.
Mr Ablakwa disclosed that the South African government has responded with urgency, expressing concern over the incident and assuring Ghana of a full-scale investigation. He added that authorities in South Africa are also preparing to brief the diplomatic community, including African ambassadors, on the matter.
According to him, Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa is closely monitoring the situation and working with local authorities to ensure proper coordination and support for affected nationals.
He further confirmed that the Ghanaian captured in the viral video has been identified and is currently receiving consular assistance. “Our colleagues have located the main victim and are offering the necessary support. He is doing very well,” he stated.
The Minister assured that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded in connection with the incident, urging the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of its citizens both at home and abroad, stressing that government will continue to take necessary diplomatic steps to protect Ghanaians wherever they are.
He also called for restraint and unity among African nations, cautioning against any actions that could strain diplomatic relations as efforts continue to resolve the matter through diplomatic channels.
