NDC condemns Dela Edem’s ‘unsavoury and distasteful’ comments about Kufuor; issues public apology

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned recent remarks on former President John Agyekum Kufuor made by Dela Edem, a member of its National Communications Team and a former President John Mahama’s adviser.

This follows the party’s quick responses to a widely shared video that showed Mr. Edem making derogatory comments about Mr. Kufuor.

The NDC publicly denounced Mr. Edem’s remarks as “unsavoury and distasteful” in a press release issued on Sunday, November 17.

The NDC does not tolerate any disrespect for elder statesmen, regardless of their political affiliations, according to the statement, which was signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s communications director.

The party went further to join Mr Edem in extending an apology to former President Kufuor, recognising the inappropriate nature of the remarks.

They also emphasized the former president’s important contributions to Ghana’s development, claiming that such remarks were inconsistent with the party’s principles and its expectations for civil political participation.

Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009, John Agyekum Kufuor, is highly regarded for his contributions to the country’s prosperity and his ability to govern.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a civil political environment and urged all participants to act with grace, particularly while speaking to the country’s former leaders.

“The attention of the National Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been drawn to some unfortunate comments attributed to one of its members, Comrade Dela Edem and directed at the person of former President and elderly statesman, H.E. John Agyekum Kufour.”

“The said comments are unsavoury and distasteful. It is therefore refreshing to note that our comrade in question has duly retracted his statements and rendered an unqualified apology to the elderly statesman.”

“The NDC adds its voice to the apology that has been rendered and hopes that this retraction and apology brings closure to the matter,” an excerpt of the statement said.
