The enduring legacy and Pan-African vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, came into sharp focus in the Western Region as Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, commissioned the newly enhanced Osagyefo Roundabout.
The upgraded public edifice, situated at the Sanzule/Krisan Roundabout in the Ellembelle District and formerly known as the Ghana Gas Roundabout, has been transformed with a striking monument dedicated to the memory and enduring legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Friday, September 18, 2026, brought together an array of distinguished personalities, traditional authorities, political leaders, scholars and invited guests from Ghana and beyond.
Among the notable personalities at the ceremony was renowned Kenyan lawyer, Pan-Africanist, scholar and public intellectual, Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba (P.L.O. Lumumba), whose participation lent a distinctly continental dimension to the occasion.
Also present was Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah; National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah; Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene; Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, Awulae Blay IX; Okatakyie Asafo Boakye III; the Chief of Sanzule; and other distinguished guests.
The transformation of the former Ghana Gas Roundabout into the Osagyefo Roundabout has given the Sanzule/Krisan corridor a renewed visual and historical identity, with the commemorative monument serving as a prominent feature of the redeveloped public space.
At the centre of the Upgrade is a monument honouring Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose political philosophy extended beyond Ghana’s independence to encompass the broader emancipation, unity, dignity and self-determination of African peoples.
Dr. Nkrumah remains a defining figure in Ghana’s independence history and the development of Pan-African thought. His advocacy for African unity, continental cooperation and economic self-reliance continues to feature prominently in conversations about Africa’s political, economic and developmental future.
Against this historical backdrop, the commissioning of the Osagyefo Roundabout went beyond the formal unveiling of a remodelled public space. It provided an opportunity to reflect on the ideals, philosophy and historical contributions of a statesman whose political vision reached far beyond Ghana’s territorial frontiers.
The presence of Professor P.L.O. Lumumba further amplified the Pan-African character of the occasion, bringing one of Africa’s recognised intellectual voices to a ceremony commemorating the life and legacy of one of the continent’s foremost independence-era leaders.
The newly transformed roundabout now serves as a striking gateway along the Sanzule/Krisan corridor, drawing attention with its imposing monument while preserving the memory of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah within the landscape.
The ceremony was marked by cultural pride, historical remembrance and celebration, as political leaders, public officials, traditional authorities, community representatives and invited guests gathered to witness the unveiling of the redeveloped facility.
With the monument now prominently positioned at the roundabout, the Osagyefo Roundabout stands as a visible tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence struggle and his enduring advocacy for African unity, while offering a lasting reminder of the Pan-African ideals that shaped his political thought and continental outlook.
