The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has pledged to continue championing and safeguarding the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking at the Nkrumahfest 2026 Grand Durbar, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said his commitment to preserving Nkrumah’s legacy was deeply personal, having benefited from the educational vision and policies associated with the former president.

“I will continue to protect Nkrumah’s legacy because I am a beneficiary of his Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (F-CUBE) that he introduced into the education system,” he stated.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s remarks highlighted the profound role education has played in shaping his personal journey, while drawing attention to the continuing relevance he attaches to Nkrumah’s vision for Ghana.

The NDC National Chairman stressed the importance of preserving the legacy of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and transmitting his ideals to succeeding generations, particularly in recognition of his contribution to Ghana’s educational and national development.

The Nkrumahfest 2026 Grand Durbar brought together dignitaries, traditional authorities, political figures and members of the public to commemorate the life, ideals and contributions of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Dr. Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and first President, remains a prominent figure in the country’s political history and the broader Pan-African movement.

His advocacy for education, industrialisation, self-determination and African unity continues to feature prominently in historical and contemporary discourse on Ghana’s development.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah’s reflection on Nkrumah’s legacy, however, is rooted in personal experience.

As a self-described beneficiary of the educational opportunities he associates with Nkrumah’s vision, the NDC National Chairman said his determination to protect that legacy was anchored not only in historical appreciation but also in personal experience.

His declaration at the Grand Durbar adds another voice to the continuing national conversation surrounding Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana and the relevance of his ideals to succeeding generations.
