Gov’t settles $29m Suame Interchange debt, commits GH¢3bn to accelerate project

The Government of Ghana has cleared an outstanding $29 million debt on the Suame Interchange project and approved an additional GH¢3 billion to expedite its completion.

The move is aimed at reviving momentum on the critical road infrastructure project, which has suffered setbacks in recent years due to financial constraints. Located in Kumasi, the Suame Interchange is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in one of the Ashanti Region’s busiest commercial and industrial areas.

Authorities say the payment of the $29 million debt removes a key obstacle that had slowed progress, paving the way for contractors to return to site and resume full operations.

The newly committed GH¢3 billion is expected to fund major aspects of the construction, including ongoing structural works and other essential components needed to bring the project to completion.

The Suame Interchange forms part of government’s broader agenda to improve road networks and enhance transportation efficiency across the country. When completed, it is anticipated to boost economic activity in Kumasi by improving connectivity within the Suame Magazine enclave and surrounding areas.

Residents and road users have long expressed concern over heavy congestion in the area, with many hopeful that the renewed financial commitment will translate into visible progress on the ground.

Government has reiterated its commitment to completing key infrastructure projects despite prevailing economic challenges.
