Austrian Bundesliga midfielder David Atanga has officially switched his international allegiance from Ghana to Burkina Faso, making him eligible to represent the Stallions after never featuring for the Black Stars at senior level.
The Bolgatanga-born Wolfsberger AC midfielder has fuelled confirmation of the switch by adding the Burkina Faso flag to his official Instagram bio, signalling the completion of the nationality change.
Atanga, 28, was once considered one of Ghana’s brightest prospects and represented the country at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand under the guidance of the late Sellas Tetteh.
During that tournament, he featured alongside several players who later progressed to senior international football, including Samuel Tetteh, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Tetteh and Godfred Donsah.
Despite his impressive rise through the youth ranks and a professional career that has taken him to Austria, Atanga never received a senior call-up to the Black Stars.
His decision to switch allegiance now opens the door for him to represent Burkina Faso in future international competitions, providing the Stallions with an experienced option in midfield.
The former Ghana youth international currently plays for Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, where he continues to ply his trade ahead of a potential first senior international appearance for Burkina Faso.
