Alban Bagbin elected Speaker of the 9th Parliament

Rtd. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been officially elected as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

Cassiel Ato Forson, the Majority Leader, moved the motion for Bagbin’s nomination and it was seconded by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

He was eventually sworn in by the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

In an acceptance speech after his swearing in, Speaker Bagbin said: “It is with great humility that I accept the high and privilege office of the Speaker of the 9th parliament of the Republic of Ghana…I am very grateful for the confidence you have reposed in me to be speaker and to head this honorable house once more. I also express my gratitude to the President-Elect John Dramani Mahama for the trust and confidence in me and my leadership of the house”.

Bagbin, Born on September 24, 1957 at Sombo in the Upper West Region, a seasoned politician, brings years of experience to this role, having served in various capacities including being a Member of Parliament for Nadowli West constituency in the Upper West Region of Ghana in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th parliaments of the 4th republic of Ghana. He was also the Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Bagbin’s deep understanding of governance and commitment to democratic principles have made him a respected figure in the political landscape. His role among others is to oversee debates, ensure order during discussions, and facilitate the legislative process.
