The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has passed away after a brief illness, bringing the curtains down on a reign that restored peace and stability to one of Ghana’s oldest traditional kingdoms.
The announcement of his demise was made on Monday by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, after the traditional talking drum was sounded and the required customary rites were performed at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
The announcement has thrown the Dagbon Kingdom into mourning, with preparations already underway at the palace for the burial of the late monarch in accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions.
According to reports, Ya-Na Abukari II had travelled to South Africa to seek medical treatment following a short illness, where he passed away.
Ya-Na Abukari II was enskinned in January 2019 after the successful implementation of the roadmap that resolved the longstanding Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, ending years of conflict and ushering in a new era of peace and reconciliation.
During his reign, he was widely credited with promoting unity within the kingdom and advancing traditional governance. He also led efforts to review the Dagbon Constitution to meet contemporary governance needs while preserving the kingdom’s cultural heritage.
The late Overlord further supervised the redevelopment of the historic Gbewaa Palace into a modern royal complex and supported several initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of communities across Dagbon.
In line with Dagbon tradition, his eldest son has been enskinned as Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari, who will serve as Regent until a new Ya-Na is selected and enskinned in accordance with the customs of the kingdom.
Ya-Na Abukari II also served as President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs and will be remembered for his role in consolidating peace and strengthening the traditional institution in Dagbon.
