Unknown persons set police post ablaze near Asempaneye Forest

A police post located near the Asempaneye Forest in the Western North Region has been set ablaze by unknown persons, leaving the facility extensively damaged and two police motorbikes completely destroyed.

The incident has triggered security concerns within the area, with authorities expected to launch investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire and identify those responsible.

Assembly Member for the Asempaneye Electoral Area, Shadrack Oppong Mintah, disclosed that he received a distress call from some road users who informed him that the police post had been engulfed in flames.

According to him, he rushed to the scene and confirmed that the structure had been ravaged by the fire. He observed that portions of the building appeared to have been deliberately damaged, raising suspicions that the blaze may have been an act of arson.

Mr Oppong Mintah said some residents believe the incident could be linked to the recent shooting at Sefwi Sayerano, where two people reportedly lost their lives during a confrontation between police officers and some residents.

He explained that while sections of the community suspect some aggrieved youth may have targeted the police post in retaliation, there is currently no official evidence to support that claim.

The Assembly Member further revealed that some unidentified persons were reportedly seen around the police facility shortly before the fire broke out, although their identities and possible involvement remain unknown.

In addition to the destruction of the police post, two police motorbikes stationed at the facility were burnt beyond recognition.

As of the time of filing this report, formal investigations had not commenced. However, the Ghana Police Service is expected to initiate a comprehensive probe to determine the cause of the fire and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident comes at a time when concerns over security and police-community relations in parts of the Western North Region remain heightened following recent disturbances in the area.
