The University of Ghana has announced a rescheduling of the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike by several tertiary employee unions.
This decision was confirmed in a statement released by the Office of the Registrar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
The development has impacted students, faculty, and other stakeholders across the university community.
The strike involves key unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG). Their coordinated industrial action has severely affected operations at the university, leading to the postponement.
Initially, the academic year was scheduled to begin with continuing students expected to report between Thursday, September 26, and Monday, September 30, 2024. Teaching was supposed to start on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, as per the previous academic calendar. However, with the strike in progress, the University has been forced to delay the start of the semester.
In the statement, the University regretted the delay but emphasized the need for resolving the issues with the unions before academic activities can resume. The university assured students and staff that a new date for the commencement of the academic year would be announced in due course.
Despite the indefinite postponement, the university has clarified that “special programmes will continue as planned, ensuring that some academic activities proceed without interruption.”
The strike by the employee unions has disrupted operations in many tertiary institutions across Ghana, with the University of Ghana being one of the most affected.
“Students, faculty, and other stakeholders are advised to follow official university communication channels for further updates on the situation,” the release said.
