The disqualification of Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election has been overwhelmingly reinstated by the University of Ghana’s Appeals Board.
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana restricted Mr. Yeboah, also referred to as Guru, from running in the student body’s presidential election.
The SRC claims that Guru did not meet the requirements to be eligible to run for the seat.
Following a court battle, the judicial board ruled that the disqualification’s reasons were valid. The musician is therefore not eligible to run for office.
The Vice Dean responded to the ruling by directing that the names of the two contenders and their corresponding running companions be added to the roster of potential presidential candidates.
“You are further, directed to carry out the balloting for all the SRC candidates vetted by the vetting committee on Monday (September 16, 2024), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA).”
“You are to immediately communicate this to all the candidates to assemble at the premises of the ODSA for the balloting, “ the September 15 letter read.
The letter further instructed the University of Ghana’s Computer Services (UGCS) to receive the list of candidates and their positions from the school’s Electoral Commission following voting.
“This is to enable the UGCS to make the necessary preparations for voting to take place on a date to be agreed with candidates (before or after the balloting) but the date so agreed should not be later than Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024,” the letter added.
