The Supreme Court has delivered a unanimous verdict in favour of Awulae Blay IX, Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, in a long-standing chieftaincy dispute involving former Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III.
The ruling, delivered on Tuesday by a five-member panel of the apex court, ended in a resounding 5-0 decision, reaffirming Awulae Blay IX’s position in the highly publicised legal battle that has drawn widespread attention across the Western Region and beyond.
The case forms part of a protracted series of legal and traditional disputes surrounding the Eastern Nzema chieftaincy, an issue that has remained a subject of intense public and customary interest for several years.
During proceedings, damages amounting to GH¢30,000 were reportedly requested by the opposing party. However, the Supreme Court awarded GH¢15,000.
The latest judgment marks another significant legal milestone for Awulae Blay IX, further consolidating his standing within the ongoing chieftaincy matter and reinforcing the authority of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council under his leadership.
The ruling could carry far-reaching implications for chieftaincy administration and customary leadership disputes across Ghana, particularly within the Western Region.
Although the full legal reasoning behind the judgment is yet to be publicly detailed, the unanimous nature of the verdict is already being interpreted by many as a decisive affirmation of Awulae Blay IX’s position in the dispute.
The ruling is expected to generate renewed discussions within both legal and traditional institutions regarding the resolution of chieftaincy conflicts and the role of the judiciary in safeguarding customary governance structures.
