The Parliamentary Service of Ghana has issued new security protocols to ensure the safety of the Speaker, Members of Parliament (MPs), staff, and other stakeholders during proceedings beginning today.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Marshal of Parliament, WG Cdr Frederick Bawa (Rtd), the new measures aim to enhance safety in and around the chamber. These measures include heightened screening procedures and restrictions on access to the premises.
The key security measures outlined are as follows:
- Screening of Entrants: All MPs, staff, and accredited members of the press will undergo thorough security screening before gaining entry to the chamber.
- No Bodyguards Allowed in the Chamber: Bodyguards accompanying MPs will not be permitted within the chamber.
- Parking Restrictions: Vehicles will not be allowed to park around the Grand Arena area.
- Designated Drop-off Zones: MPs must be dropped off at specified zones within the precincts of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
- Police Directions for Drop-off Points: The Ghana Police Service will assist with directions to the appropriate drop-off zones.
- Identification Tags: MPs are required to wear their parliamentary ID tags at all times within the premises.
- Restricted Chamber Access: Access to the chamber will commence from 8:00 a.m.
- Closure of Public Gallery: The public gallery will remain closed to the general public until further notice.
The statement emphasizes the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of these measures.
These steps come as part of ongoing efforts to bolster security within the parliamentary environment, aligning with global trends in legislative security practices.
“We are counting on the cooperation of all parties,” the statement reads, urging adherence to the new directives.
The Parliamentary Service has not provided further details on the specific reasons for the enhanced measures, but the move reflects a proactive approach to security within the legislative arm of government.
