  • President Mahama signs Legal Education Reform Bill into law, ends Ghana School of Law monopoly

President Mahama signs Legal Education Reform Bill into law, ends Ghana School of Law monopoly

President John Dramani Mahama has assented to the Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025, effectively ending the Ghana School of Law’s 65-year monopoly over professional legal education in the country.

The newly signed legislation marks a major shift in Ghana’s legal education system and is expected to widen access to professional legal training for thousands of law graduates across the country.

For decades, the Ghana School of Law remained the only institution authorized to provide professional legal education for students seeking qualification as lawyers in Ghana. The arrangement, however, attracted criticism over the years due to limited admission capacity and the growing number of qualified LLB graduates unable to gain entry into the professional law programme.

Under the new law, accredited institutions will now be permitted to offer professional legal education subject to regulatory approval and supervision by the appropriate legal and academic bodies.

The reform is expected to decentralize legal education, increase enrolment opportunities, and ease pressure on the Ghana School of Law, which has long struggled with overwhelming applications annually.

The Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025, also forms part of broader efforts aimed at modernizing Ghana’s educational framework and expanding opportunities for professional development.

Implementation of the law is expected to focus on accreditation processes, institutional readiness, and maintaining professional standards within the legal education sector.

“Those who don’t know me may think I came from nowhere to the Black Stars,” he stated. The goalkeeper further stressed that decisions regarding player selection remain the responsibility of the technical team.

Armed assailants demolish new NDC office complex in Ellembelle

A GH¢1 million office complex being constructed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Awiaso Junction in the Ellembelle District has been destroyed by unidentified armed men.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 7, 2026, amid a long-standing dispute over ownership of the land.

According to reports, the attackers, armed with guns and machetes, stormed the site and demolished portions of the facility under construction.

Hon. Joseph Armah Agyekum, the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle and Chairman of the District Security Council (DISEC), condemned the attack and described it as unlawful.

He stressed that only the courts or DISEC have the authority to order the demolition of any structure. The disputed land was reportedly purchased in 2017 by Ellembelle Member of Parliament, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah from the late chief, Nana Boadi.

Following the chief’s death, members of the Awiaso royal family challenged the legitimacy of the sale.

Although the matter was initially taken to court, both parties later agreed to resolve it through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

The DCE stated that the NDC accepted conditions proposed by the royal family, including re-paying for the land, employing local youth, and supporting the construction of a palace.

However, he alleged that the family later demanded that the MP and the NDC facilitate the gazetting of King Kaku Aka III as Overlord of Nzema land, a request he said was beyond their legal authority.

Ellembelle NDC Constituency Chairman Alex Mahama warned that those responsible for the destruction would face prosecution if arrested.

He also disclosed that the site had previously come under attack.Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

  • Mahamudu Bawumia Appoints Former Rivals as Co-Chairs of NPP Policy Committees

Mahamudu Bawumia Appoints Former Rivals as Co-Chairs of NPP Policy Committees

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has appointed all four of his former competitors in the party’s presidential primaries as co-chairmen of newly created policy committees.

The move has been described by political observers as a major effort to strengthen party unity and prepare the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The appointments form part of a broader initiative to establish a structured policy framework aimed at developing alternative policy proposals across key sectors of the economy and governance.

    New Policy Structure

At the top of the structure is the NPP Policy Committee, which will be chaired by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah. Dr. Kwasi Nyame Baafi will serve as Secretary to the committee.

The policy framework will oversee several sector-based committees covering areas such as employment, energy, education, health, transport, decentralisation, lands and natural resources, and the economy.

According to party insiders, the committees will conduct research, engage stakeholders, and develop policy alternatives backed by data and expert analysis.

    Former Rivals Given Key Roles

One of the most notable aspects of the announcement is the inclusion of Dr. Bawumia’s former primary contenders in strategic roles. Kennedy Agyapong has been named Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee.

Kwabena Agyapong will serve as Co-Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee. Dr. Bryan Acheampong has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum will co-chair the Education Policy Committee. Political analysts say the appointments could help consolidate support within the party and reduce tensions that emerged during the presidential primaries.

    Focus on 2028 Elections

Sources close to the party say Dr. Bawumia wants the NPP to move beyond criticism of government and position itself as a credible alternative with practical policy solutions.

Analysts believe the decision to involve former rivals in key responsibilities demonstrates a deliberate strategy to unite different factions within the party ahead of the next election cycle.

The committees are expected to begin work in the coming days, with stakeholder consultations and policy discussions set to follow.

  • PBC Faces Financial Crisis as Debt Hits GH¢673 Million – Report

PBC Faces Financial Crisis as Debt Hits GH¢673 Million – Report

Producer Buying Company (PBC), Ghana’s state-owned cocoa buying company, is reportedly struggling to purchase cocoa from farmers due to debts amounting to about GH¢673 million, according to a Reuters report.

Sources familiar with the matter say the company also risks losing some of its assets as creditors move to recover outstanding debts. Under Ghanaian law, PBC serves as a buyer of last resort for cocoa farmers.

However, the company is said to be facing severe financial challenges despite government assurances earlier this year to revive its operations.

    Debt Burden and Farmer Payments

According to Reuters, PBC owes cocoa farmers about GH¢24 million for more than 9,000 bags of cocoa already supplied. The company reportedly lacks the funds needed to clear the arrears or continue purchasing cocoa from farmers across the country.

Many cocoa farmers are also said to be waiting for payments for cocoa delivered since November 2025.

    Banks Move to Recover Funds

Reports indicate that a group of banks owed about GH¢257 million secured a court order in March 2026 to sell some of the company’s assets to recover their money. The development has increased pressure on the cocoa buyer, which once controlled nearly 30% of Ghana’s local cocoa market but now reportedly accounts for less than 5%.

    Challenges in the Cocoa Sector

Ghana’s cocoa sector has faced mounting difficulties in recent months due to global oversupply, declining cocoa prices, and reduced demand from chocolate manufacturers.

The source further claimed that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has not reimbursed PBC for about 800 metric tons of cocoa delivered more than two months ago. Reuters also reported that both the Ministry of Finance and COCOBOD declined to comment on the matter.

    Calls for Government Intervention

Although Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson previously indicated that reviving PBC formed part of government’s plans to support cocoa farmers, sources claim no major intervention has taken place.

The company is also reportedly battling unpaid salaries, supplier debts, and statutory obligations. Sources say government support could help stabilise PBC and restore its operations across Ghana’s cocoa-growing districts.
