EPA intercepts suspected smuggled cyanide consignment in anti-galamsey operation at Nkroful

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), with support from security personnel, has intercepted and seized a suspected smuggled consignment of sodium cyanide during an anti-galamsey operation at Nkroful in the Western Region.

The operation forms part of intensified nationwide efforts aimed at curbing illegal mining activities and the unlawful transportation of hazardous chemicals linked to galamsey operations.

According to the EPA, the consignment is suspected to have been intended for use in illegal gold mining activities within the enclave.

Sodium cyanide, a highly toxic chemical commonly used in gold extraction, is strictly regulated because of its severe risks to human health, water bodies and the environment.

Authorities say the latest interception underscores government’s renewed crackdown on illegal mining and associated environmental crimes across mining communities.

The EPA reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and preventing the unlawful use of dangerous chemicals in mining activities.

The authority further assured the public that it will continue collaborating with security agencies to protect the country’s natural resources and safeguard affected communities from the environmental impact of galamsey.

Upgrade Gwiraman SHS into boarding school – Gwira Paramount Chief appeals to government

The Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Council, Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II, has appealed to the government to upgrade Gwiraman Senior High School (Gwiraman SHS) into a boarding institution to improve enrolment and academic stability.

According to the chief, the poor state of roads in the area continues to create difficulties for students who commute daily to the school.

Speaking during the school’s 10th anniversary celebration, Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II noted that the situation has become a major concern for parents and guardians, particularly during the rainy season.

He explained that the deplorable roads discourage many families from enrolling their wards at the school despite its importance to communities within the Nzema enclave.

The Paramount Chief stated that upgrading Gwiraman SHS into a boarding school would help retain students, improve academic concentration and reduce the challenges associated with long-distance travel.

He further called on the government under President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise educational and road infrastructure development in the Gwira area.

Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II stressed that investment in education remains essential to the development of the area and the future of the youth.

Gwiraman SHS continues to serve as one of the key second-cycle institutions in the area despite ongoing infrastructural challenges.

Accra High Court Admits Abronye DC to GH¢100,000 Bail With Two Sureties

The Accra High Court has granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

The ruling was delivered on Thursday, May 21, 2026, following his earlier remand into custody by Circuit Court 9 in Accra over allegations of spreading false information.

Abronye DC’s legal team had challenged the remand order, arguing that his continued detention was unjustified and amounted to a breach of his rights. After hearing the motion, the High Court upheld the bail application.

His arrest and subsequent legal proceedings have drawn significant public and political attention, particularly after reports that he was initially granted bail during investigations before being re-arrested.

Prior to the High Court’s decision, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had criticised the handling of the case, describing the transfer of proceedings from Criminal Court Two to General Jurisdiction Two as “mind-boggling”.

The party further alleged that the procedural developments were aimed at frustrating the bail process, raising concerns over what it described as growing political intimidation against opposition figures.

Ghana issues public advisory after WHO declares Ebola outbreak global health emergency

The Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory following the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) declaration of the recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

According to the ministry, the declaration was made due to the potential risk of cross-border transmission and the dangerous nature of the disease.

In a statement signed by Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the ministry clarified that although no Ebola cases have been recorded in Ghana or the West African sub-region, the public must remain calm but vigilant.

“Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. It spreads through direct contact with blood, body fluids, secretions, or organs of infected persons, or with contaminated surfaces and materials,” the statement explained.

The ministry urged Ghanaians to strictly adhere to preventive measures, especially during public activities and mass gatherings.

Citizens have been advised to carry hand sanitisers and practise proper hand hygiene at all times, while event organisers are expected to provide handwashing stations and sanitisers at gatherings.

The advisory further encouraged frequent handwashing with soap under running water or the use of alcohol-based sanitisers in homes, schools, workplaces, markets and public spaces.

The Ministry of Health also cautioned the public against spreading rumours or misinformation that could create fear and panic, urging citizens to rely only on official government and health authority communication channels.

Additionally, persons experiencing symptoms such as sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or bleeding have been advised to immediately report to the nearest health facility for medical attention.

The ministry disclosed that it is working closely with the Ghana Health Service as well as national and international partners to intensify surveillance, screening, preparedness and response measures across the country.

Authorities say these interventions will continue to be reviewed as the situation develops globally.

  • Supreme Court Brings Final Closure to 18-Year Ecobank–Daniel Ofori Dispute, Upholds 30% Compound Interest Ruling

Supreme Court Brings Final Closure to 18-Year Ecobank–Daniel Ofori Dispute, Upholds 30% Compound Interest Ruling

The Supreme Court has finally brought an end to the long-running commercial battle between businessman Daniel Ofori and Ecobank Ghana, affirming earlier rulings that enforce a 30% compound interest obligation against the bank.

The judgment draws a definitive close to an 18-year legal contest that has moved through multiple tiers of Ghana’s judiciary and remained one of the country’s most referenced financial disputes.

The apex court confirmed that Mr. Ofori is entitled to monthly compounded interest at an agreed rate of 30% per annum, calculated from June 2, 2008—the date of his investment—through to July 25, 2018, when the Supreme Court first entered judgment in his favour.

In addition, the court directed that post-judgment interest shall continue to accrue at 13.5% until the outstanding debt is fully satisfied.

The dispute stems from a contested 2008 share transaction valued at approximately GH¢13.76 million between Mr. Ofori and Ecobank Ghana. Over the years, the case has developed into a significant reference point in Ghana’s commercial jurisprudence, particularly on compound interest agreements and the enforcement of contractual financial obligations.

Ecobank’s final attempt to overturn the earlier decision was dismissed, effectively sealing the long-standing appeal process.

The May 2026 ruling now stands as a conclusive determination in the matter, bringing long-awaited finality to a case that has shaped discourse around banking contracts and investment agreements in Ghana.
