The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a 40-foot trailer carrying an estimated 5 million tablets of Tapentadol 250mg in a major anti-drug operation.
Authorities say the consignment, which was reportedly en route to the Niger Republic, was seized through a coordinated intelligence-led exercise.
Officials describe the bust as one of the largest pharmaceutical drug interceptions in recent times, raising concerns about the growing scale of illicit drug trafficking across West Africa.
Arrests and Investigations
NACOC arrested four suspects in connection with the shipment. The individuals remain in custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Commission believes the suspects are part of a wider trafficking network involved in moving controlled substances across borders.
Investigators say more arrests could follow as they work to uncover the full scope of the operation. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the suspects.
Concerns Over Drug Abuse
Tapentadol is a powerful opioid used for pain management but is strictly regulated due to its high risk of abuse and addiction.
NACOC warned that the illegal circulation of such drugs poses a serious threat to public health and security. The Commission has pledged to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations to curb drug trafficking.
Regional Efforts
NACOC is also working with international partners to trace the origin and intended distribution channels of the seized drugs. Officials say the collaboration aims to dismantle the criminal networks behind the shipment and strengthen border security across the region.
