Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has angrily reacted to recent enquiries from former President John Mahama regarding his vice presidential record.
Instead of asking “flimsy questions,” the vice president urged Mr. Mahama to have a candid discussion.
Mahama’s five-question challenge to Dr. Bawumia, which was reminiscent of the 170 questions he asked then-Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur prior to the 2016 election, prompted this demand.
In his rebuttal, Dr Bawumia issued a pointed invitation to Mr Mahama, declaring, “I would have thought he would be man enough to face me in a one-on-one debate for the Ghanaian public to assess our respective policies, achievements, and visions. He should not hide behind these flimsy questions to avoid a debate.”
Dr Bawumia added that Mahama’s questions were no match for the more “substantive” issues he was prepared to address, offering his own list of 50 questions about Mr Mahama’s track record on the economy, infrastructure, and social intervention policies.
“Come for a debate, and I can ask the moderators to ask me these five flimsy questions,” he quipped, challenging Mahama on policies ranging from educational reforms to infrastructure growth under the NDC.
Bawumia’s 50-Question Challenge
In his thorough response, Dr. Bawumia probed Mahama’s record of governance, asking about the things he believed to be his weaknesses.
Dr. Bawumia sought clarification on a number of topics, including Mr. Mahama’s stance on free education, citing previous ads in which he claimed to be against the free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
“Why did you run advertisements against free SHS?” he asked, highlighting the contrasting education policies of the NPP and NDC.
“If you think your economic management was so good, why did we experience more than four years of Dumsor under your government?” he asked Mr. Mahama in reference to the difficulties Dumsor had under his rule.
Dr. Bawumia’s enquiries focused on specific policy reversals, such as the elimination of teacher and nursing training allowances, which the NPP has subsequently reinstated, in addition to the economy.
The Vice President also questioned how Mr. Mahama’s government handled infrastructure and social services, asking him to cite “any broad-based social intervention policy” that was put into place during his administration.
