President John Dramani Mahama has approved the recruitment of 16,000 teachers into the Ghana Education Service (GES) as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s education sector and address staffing shortages in public schools.
The approval is expected to improve teacher availability across the country, particularly in underserved communities where inadequate staffing continues to affect teaching and learning.
The recruitment forms part of the government’s broader commitment to improving access to quality education while creating employment opportunities for trained teachers awaiting posting.
Although details on the recruitment process, eligibility criteria and application timelines are yet to be announced, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service are expected to provide further information in the coming days.
Education stakeholders have long advocated for the engagement of more qualified teachers to ease pressure on existing staff, improve teacher-to-pupil ratios and enhance learning outcomes across basic and second-cycle institutions.
The decision is also expected to offer employment to thousands of trained teachers who have completed their studies and are awaiting placement into the public education system.
Government has consistently identified education as a key pillar of national development, with investments in teacher recruitment, infrastructure and learning resources aimed at improving educational standards nationwide.
