Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken full responsibility for the chaos that erupted during the hearings of several cabinet nominations last week.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin recognized the disturbances, which raised alarm among the general people.
The Effutu MP begged Speaker Alban Bagbin to reevaluate his choice and its consequences after the incident. This contradicts with the minority’s original position that the Speaker’s actions were not within the House’s Standing Orders.
“Mr Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side, for all actions that took place. I will therefore conclude by inviting you, Mr Speaker, to, in the circumstance and with assurance given, consider rescinding the decision you communicated to the House, as well as all consequential matters there too,” he stated.
In handling the fallout from the riots, the Majority Leader urged a more accommodative stance.
In the wake of the contentious and disruptive vetting session, the Speaker appointed a special committee to look into the issue.
After the confrontation, four MPs from both sides were also suspended.
Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib are among the suspended MPs, along with Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the head whips for the Minority and Majority caucuses.
