Hearts of Oak’s pursuit of the Ghana Premier League title hit a roadblock in a stalemate with Holy Stars

It was an electric atmosphere at the Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III Sports Arena in Ampain, as Basake Holy Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak faced off in what was billed as a Matchweek 18 cracker. The stakes were high for both teams, with Holy Stars seeking redemption after a frustrating draw against Aduana Stars, while Accra Hearts of Oak also came off the back of a disappointing draw against FC Samartex.

The energy was palpable, the stadium packed to the brim with passionate supporters, eager for a thrilling encounter.

From the first whistle, the intensity was undeniable. Both teams came out of the gate looking to assert their dominance, creating opportunities in front of goal with an urgency that made it clear neither side wanted to leave empty-handed.

Basake Holy Stars, buoyed by a raucous home crowd, looked lively and determined to make the most of their advantage, while Hearts of Oak, though disciplined, struggled to convert their chances.

The game had its fair share of dramatic moments. Just before the break, the tactical switch by Hearts of Oak coach, bringing on Mawuli Wayo in place of Karikari, seemed to ignite a spark in the home side. However, just minutes later, Wayo had a golden opportunity to put his team ahead, but he inexplicably missed a sitter that would have sent the crowd into raptures. That miss would come to haunt them as the match progressed.

In the second half, both teams pushed for the breakthrough, but the match was riddled with misfortune for Hearts of Oak. The injury to Hussein Mohammed forced an early substitution, further disrupting their rhythm. Despite this setback, the Phobians’ goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, was called into action on more than one occasion. Asare’s late heroics were on full display when he pulled off an incredible save to deny a curling free-kick from substitute Bismark Teye, who had been the hero for Holy Stars in their draw against Aduna Stars the week before.

Despite their best efforts, Hearts of Oak couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities presented to them, while Holy Stars, despite the relentless backing of their 12th man—the supporters—failed to find the breakthrough either. Both coaches, unwavering in their strategies, couldn’t get the desired result as the game ultimately ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw.

The draw means Hearts of Oak remain in fifth place, four points adrift of the top, with hopes of closing the gap to the leaders fading. For Holy Stars, the search for a first win in 2025 continues, but they remain a solid six points clear of the relegation zone, determined to fight on.

A tense, high-octane affair that delivered everything but goals—a match that will be remembered for its intensity, the near-misses, and the resilience of both teams. The fans left disappointed, but proud, as their teams gave it their all in a match that, for all its drama, ultimately left both sides craving for more.
