‘Ghana Has the Better League, But Ethiopia Treats Players Better’ – Salifu Ibrahim

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Salifu Ibrahim has drawn a comparison between the Ghana Premier League and the Ethiopian Premier League, insisting that while Ghana’s domestic competition is of a higher standard, players in Ethiopia enjoy better professional treatment.

The 26-year-old, who currently plays for CBE Ethiopian Premier League side Wolayta Dicha Sport Club, made the remarks on Fakye TV Sports while reflecting on his football journey and life in Ethiopia.

Salifu joined the Sodo-based outfit after leaving Kosovo champions FC Drita, where he spent a period following his departure from Hearts of Oak.

According to the Ghanaian-born Beninese international, the Ghana Premier League remains superior in terms of quality, intensity and competitiveness. However, he believes Ethiopian clubs provide a more professional environment for players through improved welfare, organisation and overall working conditions.

His comments are expected to fuel ongoing discussions about the need to strengthen professionalism and player welfare in Ghana’s domestic game.

Salifu rose to prominence after completing a move from Techiman Eleven Wonders to Accra Hearts of Oak under then-head coach Samuel Boadu. He quickly established himself as one of the club’s key midfielders during a successful period.

He played a vital role as Hearts of Oak clinched the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League title and won two MTN FA Cup trophies, cementing his place among the club’s standout performers before pursuing opportunities abroad.

Now with Wolayta Dicha, Salifu continues to advance his career while offering valuable insight into the contrasting football environments in Ghana and Ethiopia.
