The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring peaceful and transparent 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. In a press release dated December 1, 2024, the GAF emphasized that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations on election day. Instead, their role will be limited to standby support, with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) holding primary responsibility for election security.
The statement, signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director of Public Relations, clarified that military deployment will only occur if requested by the GPS, ensuring law and order are maintained while respecting democratic principles. This collaborative approach underscores the GAF’s dedication to maintaining peace without direct involvement in polling station activities.
In a bid to promote transparency and prevent any potential misunderstandings, the GAF encouraged citizens to report any individuals falsely identifying themselves as military personnel or wearing military-patterned attire at polling stations. Such incidents should be reported to the nearest police station or through the GPS toll-free numbers, 18555 or 0800 311 311.
The GAF also called on the public to exercise their civic duties responsibly and refrain from actions that could disrupt the peace. “GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the election process,” the release stated.
This announcement aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to ensure credible elections and uphold democratic values. The assurance of a police-led security approach, with the military in a backup role, has been welcomed by stakeholders as a significant step toward fostering public confidence in the electoral process.
As the elections draw closer, the GAF’s transparent communication and clear boundaries of engagement highlight its role as a nonpartisan institution committed to protecting Ghana’s democracy.
