Captain Smart, the host of the well-liked Onua Maakye morning show, has levied shocking accusations against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the party intended to secure the number eight spot on the upcoming presidential election ballot but unintentionally chose the number one spot.
During his broadcast, Captain Smart revealed that insiders in the NPP have verified the party’s intention to be placed eighth on the ballot, either strategically or symbolically. Nevertheless, the NPP’s delegate selected the first spot by error during the official ballot draw held by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Captain Smart continued his allegation that the NPP called an internal conference in response to this unexpected event, during which preparations were planned to approach certain independent presidential candidates and offer them money in an attempt to get them to drop out of the race.
The intended goal, according to the TV host, was to trigger a situation in which the EC would be forced to reprint the presidential ballot paper. This move, he suggested, could potentially give the NPP another chance at selecting their preferred position on the ballot.
“They had a secret meeting where the agenda was to pay money to some independent candidates to withdraw from the race,” Captain Smart claimed. “Their hope was that when these candidates step aside, the EC would have no choice but to recall the ballot process, and they could try again to get number 8.”
If verified, these allegations present grave questions regarding the fairness of the next elections and the extent political parties will go to ensure their interests are served. To add to the uncertainty, Captain Smart did not offer any concrete proof to back up these claims.
Such claims will probably increase the already high level of anxiety surrounding the impending polls as election season heats up.
