Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor says Parliament and key state institutions have stepped in following the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Netherlands.
According to him, the incident occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, and was immediately reported to parliamentary leadership after he received information about the situation.
Speaking on ChannelOne TV’s The Point of View, Dafeamekpor disclosed that the Majority Leader quickly engaged authorities in the Netherlands to understand the circumstances surrounding the MP’s detention.
He explained that the response has since expanded to include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana’s Embassy in The Hague, the Attorney General’s Department, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and the Clerk to Parliament. “We have coordinated this matter very well,” he stated.
Dafeamekpor revealed that Parliament has also secured legal representation for the detained lawmaker. According to him, a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague is currently handling the matter and engaging prosecutors in Amsterdam.
He further explained that the Attorney General’s involvement became necessary because of legal issues linked to the Rome Statute and the MP’s use of a diplomatic passport. “The Speaker himself has been brought in,” he added.
The South Dayi MP noted that discussions and consultations among diplomatic and legal officials have continued since the incident occurred.
He assured the public that the detained MP remains safe and in good condition. Dafeamekpor also appealed to media organisations to avoid circulating unverified information, stressing that authorities are still waiting for authenticated documents relating to the arrest warrant. “The warrant for his arrest, we are yet to receive the authenticated copy,” he said.
He explained that although the trip was private, the use of a diplomatic passport has made the issue one of national and parliamentary concern.
Diplomatic and legal efforts to resolve the matter are ongoing.
