Mahama not a clearing agent, I’m responsible for all dropped cases – Dr. Ayine

Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has denied allegations that President John Mahama is to blame for the demise of cases involving prominent individuals who are charged with crimes.

Dr. Ayine has drawn criticism for dropping cases against former Mahama administration officials and associates, such as the Saglemi Housing Project, the Democracy Hub case, the charges against current Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama, and the prosecution of Stephen Opuni in the COCOBOD case.

Dr. Ayine has categorically denied the accusations made by some opponents that President Mahama had any influence over the decision to withdraw these cases.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, February 12, he categorically denied any indication of political meddling and declared that he alone is accountable for the choices his office makes.

“As Attorney General, I take full responsibility for all the decisions so far taken. I am not under any instruction or pressure to discontinue any case or to bring charges against anyone,” he asserted.

Dr. Ayine further rejected accusations that Mahama had acted as a “clearing agent” in the process, emphasizing the independence of his office.

“Those who are in a haste to tag the President of the Republic, John Mahama, as a clearing agent should hasten slowly because he is not responsible for prosecutions and has not directed me to drop any case,” he stated.

Dr. Ayine restated that all prosecution choices were taken on the basis of the law, not politics.
