Ghana’s Parliament will host the 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) from Friday, October 25, to Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Accra. The conference, under the distinguished leadership of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will bring together parliamentary leaders from across Africa.
CoSPAL, established in 2020, serves as a platform for deliberation, collaboration, and cooperation among speakers and presidents of parliaments and national assemblies. Its objective is to address common challenges, formulate joint strategies, and mobilize efforts to promote Africa’s development through unified legislative governance.
The inaugural General Assembly of CoSPAL took place in May 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria, under the leadership of the then Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila. That assembly laid the foundation for convergence on key issues, including post-COVID economic recovery and democratic advancement.
The 2nd General Assembly in Accra will gather approximately 120 participants, comprising 15 speakers and presidents of national legislatures, 30 deputy speakers and presidents, clerks, and secretary generals, alongside parliamentary staff from various African countries. The conference aims to build upon the groundwork laid during the first assembly and foster unity and collaborative governance across African legislatures.
“This assembly marks a significant step towards enhancing legislative effectiveness and promoting regional solidarity to address shared challenges across the continent,” the statement from the Media Relations Department of Ghana’s Parliament noted. The conference will also provide an opportunity to showcase Ghana’s commitment to democracy and hospitality.
The event will be held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra, which has been designated as the venue for the assembly.
