The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is set to once again review Arsène Wenger’s proposal to modify football’s offside rule, a change that could have a major impact on the modern game.
According to Diario AS, Wenger’s idea suggests that an attacking player should only be considered offside if their entire body is ahead of the last defender. The proposal aims to reduce the number of marginal offside decisions and minimize VAR controversies involving “millimetric” calls, while also encouraging more attacking play and increasing goal opportunities.
However, if adopted, the new interpretation could fundamentally alter defensive strategies, forcing teams to adapt their lines and timing in ways not seen before in the sport’s history.
