President Mahama receives details of the 2020 and 2024 electoral violence report

A thorough report describing instances of electoral violence from the general elections in 2020 and 2024 has been delivered to President John Mahama, he revealed.

He promised that if misconduct is proven, those responsible will be held accountable and victims will be compensated.

As part of his efforts to uphold democratic principles and reduce political violence in Ghana, President Mahama told the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Friday that he had received the report the previous week.

He said that after the Attorney General completes his recommendations, prosecuting choices and victim compensation procedures will be made.

Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), wrote the report, which describes violent events that occurred throughout both election cycles, such as gunshots and altercations between security forces and party supporters.

Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General, has now formally received the findings for legal evaluation and future action.

In order to investigate the circumstances surrounding election-related deaths—a total of eight in 2020 and three in 2024—the President previously instructed the IGP to form a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) task team.

Working with the Electoral Commission, the investigation involved in-depth reviews, witness interviews, and forensic analysis.

In keeping with the President’s insistence that actions taken toward restitution and reform must be equitable, open, and inclusive, the Attorney General has now been entrusted with determining appropriate and reasonable compensation for victims and their families.
