In a high-stakes parliamentary rerun, eligible voters in Ablekuma North are anticipated to cast their ballots at 19 voting centers throughout the constituency today, Friday, July 11, 2025.
Restoring representation to a seat that hasn’t had a member of parliament since December 2024 and settling a months-long electoral dispute are the goals of the rerun.
Ablekuma North: A Seat in Limbo
Since the general elections on December 7, 2024, when the results of 62 voting places were disputed, there has been uncertainty about the Ablekuma North parliamentary results.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disagreed on the collation procedure and the validity of pink sheets.
Three voting stations remained unresolved after the Electoral Commission (EC) collected results from 59 of the 62. This led to further court cases.
The High Court ordered the EC to finish the collation and release the results in a verdict in January 2025. To maintain election integrity and transparency, the EC later declared preparations for a repeat in 19 polling stations, citing anomalies and missing endorsements.
NPP’s Boycott and Candidate’s Defiance
At first, the NPP vehemently disagreed with the EC’s ruling, claiming that Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, its parliamentary candidate, had won the December election by a margin of 414 votes.
The court dismissed the lawsuit on July 9 after finding the motion to be unmeritorious, despite the party’s unsuccessful attempt to obtain an injunction to stop the replay. Akua Afriyie disregarded the party’s stated boycott and declared her intention to run in the rerun. “I’m running for office. We’re ready. On July 10, she told reporters, “We are going for this contest.”
Some constituency executives, previous and present NPP MPs, and party supporters supported her position and aggressively campaigned for her before the election.
NDC’s Confidence and Ground Game
The NDC, however, has stayed unwavering. The party is certain that it would win the repeat with a landslide victory since its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, is a legitimate winner of the December election. In the constituency, MPs and party leaders have been actively campaigning to encourage voters to support the NDC.
“The people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections, Joshua Alabi, during a campaign stop on Thursday.
EC Assures Transparency
The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its determination to hold a credible, equitable, and free rerun. Voters and stakeholders were reassured by Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare during a press briefing in Accra that the Commission was committed to finding a solution.
“We are desirous of bringing the election in the Ablekuma North constituency to a conclusion and to ensure that the constituents have a representative in Parliament,” he said.
To preserve order and guarantee peaceful voting, security has been increased at all 19 impacted voting centers.
What’s at Stake
The results of today’s rerun will indicate the strength and unity of the opposing parties in addition to deciding who will represent Ablekuma North in the 9th Parliament.
A victory for the NDC would entail overturning a seat that has hitherto favored the NPP. Akua Afriyie’s victory would highlight the NPP’s grassroots support despite leadership disagreements.
The final result, which could have a big impact on both parties’ status in Parliament and internal unity going into future elections, will be the focus of all eyes when voters cast their ballots.
