The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has threatened to start a series of actions on June 1, 2025, if the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not address the rising number of violent crimes and threats against teachers in schools across the country.
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu stressed the value of self-defense in increasingly hazardous school environments during an interview on Citi FM.
“Self-preservation is the first order of life. According to a story from citinewsroom.com, Carbonu stated, “I should be allowed to come to school armed if someone can arm himself and harm me.”
He went on to say that if necessary, educators are prepared to act independently.
“We will have to protect ourselves. We will have to make sure that no stupid student kills us in the line of our duty,” he stated.
His remarks come after a number of unsettling instances where kids have physically attacked or threatened teachers, instances that have raised national concerns about school safety and discipline.
NAGRAT has strongly criticized the government and GES for what it describes as a pitiful reaction to these concerns, warning that further inaction could have disastrous consequences. It is calling for immediate action to safeguard educators around the country.
