President John Dramani Mahama has declared that there will be 23 government ministries instead of the existing 30.
An Executive Instrument released on January 9, 2025, announced this decision, which is a component of a larger plan to enhance public service delivery and save government operating costs.
The declaration is consistent with a major pledge made by President Mahama during his campaign to cut back on the number of ministries and guarantee a more targeted and efficient government.
Mahama had already promised to run the government with fewer ministries, with the goal of keeping it to 60 ministries in order to promote improved accountability, cost effectiveness, and expedited decision-making.
The action fits into a larger plan to reorganize the nation’s governing frameworks and raise the general efficacy of the public sector.
In accordance with section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327), the President used his constitutional authority to carry out this decrease in the official Executive Instrument of January 9, 2025.
As a result, certain ministries have been combined. The Civil Service Act gives the President the authority to reorganize government ministries and agencies as needed to increase the effectiveness of the civil service.
