AngloGold Ashanti, UMaT Commission Smart Systems Centre to Drive STEM Innovation

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has commissioned a modern Smart Systems Centre aimed at strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education while nurturing the next generation of innovators in Ghana.

The commissioning ceremony was held at the UMaT Library Parking Area in Tarkwa under the theme, “Empowering Future Innovators Through STEM and Smart Systems.”

The facility is expected to serve as a centre of excellence for smart technologies, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence and other emerging technological fields, providing students with practical training, research opportunities and industry-driven innovation.

The project forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s broader commitment to promoting education, technological advancement and sustainable community development through strategic partnerships with academic institutions.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Mr. Daniel Boadi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in initiatives that equip young people with relevant skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

He noted that the Smart Systems Centre would provide an enabling environment for students to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions capable of addressing real-world challenges while contributing to Ghana’s industrial and technological growth.

The Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, described the facility as a major milestone in the university’s quest to become a leading institution in technology-driven education and research.

According to him, the centre will enhance practical learning, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthen research capacity in smart systems and emerging technologies.

He further expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine for its continued investment in higher education, innovation and human capital development, describing the partnership as a model for effective collaboration between academia and industry.

The Smart Systems Centre is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing STEM education, fostering innovation and preparing graduates with the technical competencies required to thrive in an increasingly digital and technology-driven global economy.

The commissioning adds to AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s growing portfolio of social investment projects, reflecting the company’s dedication to supporting education, innovation and sustainable development within its host communities and beyond.
