The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in response to the results of the presidential and legislative elections held on December 7, is advising its followers to refrain from damaging the nation’s official institutions.
Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s communications officer, asserts that the NDC has won the election and that attacking and invading public institutions would be a waste of time.
“There is no need to attack government institutions or vandalize any public property; there is no need for that,” Mr Gyamfi said.
He asserted that the current NPP leadership has engaged in numerous corrupt activities and may be looking for ways to evade responsibility. He clarified that corrupt officials may take advantage of the destruction caused by attacks on these state offices by NDC supporters in order to avoid accountability.
“There are many NPP supporters who want to destroy evidence of their wrongdoings and criminal conduct. Don’t give them a smooth excuse to do that,” he said.
He further urged supporters to remain calm and celebrate the victory peacefully, saying, “Please, we beg you,”.
Just 48 hours after the elections, on Monday, December 9, a few irate NDC supporters broke into a number of state buildings, including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) office in Accra’s Ayawaso East Municipality.
Additionally, they are accused of breaking into the Kaneshie yard of Metro Mass Transport Limited. In addition, some supporters have surrounded polling stations around the nation, calling for an immediate announcement of the legislative results of the recently finished elections. By Monday evening, the results will be announced by the Electoral Commission.
