Vandalism in the Savannah Region in Damongo has been denounced by the National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP).
The delay in announcing the election results prompted angry youths to set fire to the Damongo Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) building. The office and its contents sustained serious damage as a result.
Frustrated by the protracted wait for the election results, the youngsters stormed the EC office and set it on fire, according to witnesses. The accused are now in custody.
In a statement, the National Peace Council and WANEP said, “The National Peace Council (NPC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and other partners in the Election Situation Room are aware of reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) office and collation centre in Damango, Savannah Region, has been vandalised and set ablaze.”
It demanded that political supporters leave the collation centers so that their authorized representatives could watch the collation procedure.
“It is essential that political supporters withdraw from the collation centres and allow their accredited agents to observe the collation process. The NPC calls on party leaders to make a public call on their supporters to withdraw from collation centres.
