The ban that banned Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate for Amenfi Central, from running in the next parliamentary election has been lifted by the Sekondi High Court.
After the matter was adjourned earlier, the NDC requested that the court lift the injunction on its candidate and reject the substantive disqualification. The verdict was issued on Monday, November 11, 2024.
His Lordship George K. Gyan-Kontoh presided over the case.
Edudzie Tamakloe, one of Joana Gyan Cudjoe’s main solicitors, had previously asked the court to postpone the application.
Tamakloe asked the court to take the substantive disqualification issue into consideration, pointing out that if it waits any longer, his client would lose her right to vote and be unable to take part in the parliamentary election on December 7.
His Lordship Gyan-Kontoh consented to examine the substantive case, stressing the significance of finding a quick solution. Prior to the planned hearing, he also urged the parties to consider the possibility of an out-of-court settlement.
But since an out-of-court settlement could not be reached, today’s decision lifted the injunction, enabling Joana Gyan Cudjoe to continue with her candidature.
The NDC candidate can now run for the Amenfi Central seat because the case has been settled in time for the next elections.
After the court’s decision, Cudjoe spoke to the media, saying, “We thank God for everything that has happened today, especially my new lawyers who came in to rescue me.I give thanks to God, the NDC members, the executives, and the entire NDC for the Western region. I have to admit that I’m really delighted.
