Energy Minister Assures 24-Hour Restoration Work at Damaged GRIDCo Substation in Akosombo

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured that engineers working to restore the damaged Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation at Akosombo will operate on a 24-hour shift system to speed up recovery efforts following a fire outbreak triggered by an explosion on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

According to the Minister, the decision forms part of urgent measures to ensure the rapid rehabilitation of the critical power transmission facility and to minimise any potential disruptions to electricity supply across the country.

He indicated that technical teams have already been deployed to the site to assess the extent of the damage and begin immediate restoration works. The round-the-clock operation, he explained, is aimed at ensuring continuous progress until full normalcy is restored.

The incident at the Akosombo substation raised concerns within the energy sector, prompting swift intervention from GRIDCo engineers and emergency response teams. Authorities are currently working to stabilise the situation while investigations into the cause and impact of the explosion continue.

Mr. Jinapor reiterated government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s power infrastructure and assured the public that all necessary resources have been mobilised to restore the facility in the shortest possible time.
