Playing for Ghana is a dream come true – Antoine Semenyo

Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo has described his joy in playing for his nation as a “dream come true” and a “honour.”

On June 1, 2022, the gifted striker earned his debut for the Ghanaian national team in a decisive 3-0 win against Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tournament.

Semenyo revealed in an open interview with BBC’s Football Focus that he and his family experienced a lot of emotion when he was called up to the Black Stars for the first time.

“My mum was crying on the phone. Dad doesn’t really jump up too much, but he was so excited,” he recalled. “It’s an honor to play for Ghana. It’s just a dream come true.”

Despite being born in England, Semenyo has always had a strong attachment to his Ghanaian heritage. He talked about how he enjoys getting back in touch with friends and family in Ghana and how he embraces the lively football culture there whenever he’s with the Black Stars.

“I love going back to our home country and seeing family, seeing friends as well. They’re so eager about football,” he said, reflecting on Ghana’s deep passion for the sport.

Semenyo has made more than 20 appearances for the Black Stars since making his debut and has become a vital member of the squad.

Later this month, Ghana will play Angola and Niger in the last stages of the 2025 AFCON qualifications, and Semenyo is anticipated to be a part of that team.
