Following the death of flagbearer Madam Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has been asked by the Electoral Commission (EC) to choose a new presidential candidate within ten days.
The EC has also temporarily stopped printing presidential ballots, which were almost finished, in response to this event. Following the Commission’s official notification of Madam Akua Donkor’s passing, this decision was taken.
In a statement issued on October 29, the EC said, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion.”
The Electoral Commission extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Madam Akua Donkor, who passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra.
Her death’s circumstances are still unknown.
An influential figure in Ghanaian politics, Akua Donkor founded and led the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and was known for her steadfast support of women’s and farmers’ rights.
With the country’s general elections coming up on December 7, 2024, her death is a major setback for the party and her followers.
