Free Zones CEO Faces Sack Calls Over ‘Distasteful’ Comments — Nana B Speaks

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has called on President John Mahama to revoke the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Board (GFZB), Madam Mary Ewusi, following remarks she allegedly made about the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

The issue stems from comments made by Apostle Nyamekye during the presentation of the “State of the Church” address at the 48th General Assembly of the Church of Pentecost.

In his address, he lamented the devastating effects of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s water bodies, noting that pollution has begun to hinder the church’s traditional river baptism practices.

He further indicated that the Church is collaborating with the state to address the problem.

However, reacting to the remarks, Madam Ewusi reportedly cautioned the Apostle against making statements about galamsey, warning him to desist or face consequences. The comments, which have since gone viral, have sparked public debate.

In a strongly worded statement, Henry Nana Boakye described Madam Ewusi’s response as a “shocking twist” and a “distasteful attack” on a respected religious leader. He further alleged that the CEO told Apostle Nyamekye to “shut up or face the consequences.

”According to him, the incident is not isolated but reflects a broader pattern by the current administration. He claimed it signals what he described as a “state-sanctioned attempt” to silence dissenting voices.

Nana B subsequently called on the Presidency and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take swift action to address the matter. He demanded the immediate revocation of Madam Ewusi’s appointment and an unqualified apology to Apostle Nyamekye and the Church of Pentecost.

Madam Mary Ewusi has since apologised over the incident.

Despite the apology, Mr. Boakye maintained that the opposition and the general public would not be intimidated into silence regarding the government’s performance.

“President Mahama must remember that he will never be able to gag well-meaning Ghanaians from expressing their disappointment with the many broken promises by his government,” he stated, adding that the NPP would continue to hold the administration accountable in the interest of ordinary citizens.
