The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the appointment of experienced Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former Real Madrid manager takes over at a crucial time for Ghana, with the senior national team seeking stability and consistency as they continue their World Cup qualification campaign.
Queiroz, 72, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having handled several national teams including Portugal, Iran, Colombia and Egypt. He is widely respected for his tactical discipline and organisational strength, qualities the GFA believes will help strengthen the Black Stars.
During his time with Iran, Queiroz guided the Asian side to back-to-back FIFA World Cup appearances in 2014 and 2018, earning plaudits for his team’s defensive solidity against some of the world’s top sides.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the GFA to rebuild and reposition the Black Stars on the international stage following a period of inconsistent performances.
The Portuguese tactician is expected to work closely with the current crop of players, blending experienced names with emerging talents as Ghana pushes for qualification to the 2026 World Cup.
Further details regarding his contract and backroom staff are expected to be communicated by the GFA in the coming days.
