Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has candidly shared the intimate story behind her early marriage, revealing that she was married off at the age of 19 through an arrangement made by her parents. According to the celebrated actress, the decision was not hers, and the early days of the union were filled with fear and emotional uncertainty, as she struggled to connect with a man she had not chosen for herself.
With time, however, Ozokwo said affection gradually took root, transforming the arranged union into a partnership built on love and commitment. The marriage lasted 23 years, though much of that journey was shaped by adversity, as her husband battled illness for 15 years before passing away in 2000.
She revealed that the union was blessed with three biological children, and later, she extended her compassion by adopting five more. Sadly, one of the adopted children died, leaving her today with seven children. After the death of her husband, Ozokwo said she never considered remarriage, choosing instead to channel her strength and focus into raising her children.
Reflecting on the state of marriage in contemporary society, the veteran actress observed that despite increased self-awareness and preparation, many marriages still fail. She contrasted this with the past, when parent-arranged marriages were approached with patience, endurance, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Ozokwo attributed the stability of her home to the strong values she instilled in her children, emphasizing respect, responsibility, and sacrifice. She noted that she raised her daughters to be respectful and her sons to be accountable, principles she believes helped her build a strong and united family despite life’s many challenges.
