President Mahama Launches 2,000-Unit Barracks Project, Commissions New Vehicles for Ghana Armed Forces

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for Phase One of a 2,000-unit military barracks development and commissioned a new fleet of vehicles for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), signalling a renewed push to strengthen the country’s defence infrastructure and operational readiness.

The ceremony, held on Friday, January 23, formed part of activities at the West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) event. In his address, President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s determination to provide the Armed Forces with the necessary tools and facilities to effectively carry out their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the nation.

The ambitious barracks project is designed to modernise accommodation and improve living standards for military officers and personnel, while the newly deployed vehicles are expected to enhance troop mobility, reduce response times, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Highlighting ongoing national security initiatives, the President announced the completion of two forward operating bases in northern Ghana, describing them as critical components of a broader strategy to reinforce security across the country.

“Working closely with the military high command, government continues to roll out strategic interventions, including the construction of forward operating bases nationwide,” he stated.

“I am pleased to inform you that two of these facilities in the northern sector are completed and ready for commissioning.”

President Mahama further disclosed that sufficient budgetary provisions have been made to ensure the completion of four additional forward operating bases before the close of the year, as part of efforts to deepen military presence in vulnerable areas.

He concluded by assuring officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces of the government’s steadfast support, stressing that investing in defence infrastructure and logistics remains essential to maintaining Ghana’s peace, stability, and territorial integrity.
