President John Mahama has visited the victims of the stampede that happened on November 12, 2025, at Accra’s El-Wak Sports Stadium.
Members of the military high command, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister in Charge of Government Communications, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Acting Minister of Defense, accompanied him on the visit.
Before interacting with some of the victims, hospital authorities informed the President.
Per the briefing one of the hospital authorities, there 28 casualties:
- 6 dead
- 5 in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- 12 in fairly critical condition
Earlier, news broke that ats ix people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
The terrible occurrence happened just before the recruitment exercise started at around 6:20 a.m., according to a news release from Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to preliminary investigations, an unanticipated influx of applicants who broke security procedures and hurried through the gates before the planned screening caused the stampede. Chaos and numerous casualties resulted from this abrupt shift.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured,” the statement said. Those injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise the affected individuals and that arrangements are underway to notify the families of the deceased.
“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured. Further updates will be communicated,” the statement added.
