Tragic Stampede at El-Wak Stadium Claims Six Lives During Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment Exercise

A tragic stampede occurred early Wednesday morning at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the commencement of the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, resulting in the deaths of six potential recruits and injuries to several others.

According to a press release issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the incident happened around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the uncontrolled rush triggered chaos and led to the unfortunate loss of lives. The injured victims are currently receiving emergency medical attention at the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize their conditions.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” the statement read. The GAF also assured the public that steps are being taken to contact the families of those affected and that further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.

The recruitment exercise, which draws thousands of hopeful applicants each year, was temporarily halted following the incident.
