According to President John Dramani Mahama, his government is committed to accountability and the recovery of stolen state resources, and as such, more than 200 corruption-related cases are presently being looked into and prosecuted.
The prosecutions are being carried out under “Operation Recover the Loot,” a nationwide initiative to recover embezzled money and bring criminals accountable, Mr. Mahama told reporters during his first presidential media appearance since taking office back in the White House.
About 80 people have been interrogated thus far, he said, and several of those cases are already pending in court. There are currently more than 200 cases being investigated, and 80 persons have been questioned thus far.
A number of prosecutions have started moving forward gradually and are still firmly on track,” the President revealed. As examples, he pointed to the Republic versus Adu Boahen and three others case, in which proceedings had already begun, and the SkyTrain case, which now has a set trial date.
He stated that charges in the National Service Authority case have been prepared and would be submitted at the start of the next legal year, while the government is waiting for the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic audit before moving forward with the National Cathedral case.
Mr Mahama stressed that his government’s insistence on due process should not be mistaken for inaction. “Yes, our insistence on doing things the right way may afford those who have looted this country some temporary relief, but let me be clear, it will not grant them permanent escape,” he declared.
The President assured Ghanaians that every case of corruption with sufficient evidence would be prosecuted “swiftly and firmly,” reaffirming his administration’s commitment to restore integrity to public service.
The President used the livestreamed media engagement on GraphicOnline to answer concerns about accountability and governance while also providing the public with an update on his Resetting Ghana Agenda, economic reforms, and social initiatives.
