The trial of former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairman Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi and former Chief Executive Officer Solomon Asamoah regarding the $2 million Accra Sky Train project failure has been set to begin on July 23 by the Accra High Court.
Both men are accused of intentionally misusing public funds and inflicting financial loss to the state. They have been released on bond after entering a not guilty plea.
The legal team representing Professor Ameyaw Akumfi formally retracted their previous motion to have the accusations against him dropped during a court hearing on Wednesday, July 9.
The Attorney General had previously filed for an abridgement of time in response to the application, which caused the court to establish an earlier hearing date of July 3.
However, because the defense team was not there, the proceedings did not take place that day. In open court, Prof. Akumfi’s lead attorney withdrew the application, and Justice Comfort Tasiame struck it out when the hearing resumed on July 9.
Now representing Solomon Asamoah, lawyer Victoria Barth asked for more time to go over case files, pointing out that she had just taken over the case from former counsel.
In order to start the trial, Justice Tasiame then postponed the case to July 23. The first of eight witnesses will be called when the proceedings start, the prosecution told the court.
