ENI boosts Ghana’s natural gas supply to strengthen energy reliability

-

As part of initiatives to improve Ghana’s energy infrastructure and guarantee a more dependable power supply, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a major increase in the nation’s natural gas supply, led by energy company ENI.

ENI will boost its natural gas output by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) starting on Sunday, July 13, 2025, increasing the daily supply to 270 MMscfd. The Ministry characterized the action as a calculated step in the direction of creating a sustainable and resilient energy future.

ENI will temporarily halt its gas export activities in order to make the upgrade possible. Although this step is required to implement the improvement and streamline the supply chain, it will temporarily lower the amount of gas available for electricity generation, which could cause short-term problems.

In preparation, the Ministry has worked with electricity industry partners to put in place a series of backup plans. These include improved power output monitoring and emergency preparedness to guarantee nationwide electrical stability.

“We are confident that these proactive steps will effectively manage the transition and maintain a stable power supply for all citizens,” the Ministry said in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Richmond Rockson.

“We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the public and stakeholders during this period of enhancement.”

In the meanwhile, on Sunday, July 13, there will be a statewide power outage, according to Energy Minister John Jinapor. The interruption will be caused by the temporary closure of gas valves to make room for repairs and maintenance projects that will boost gas production.

The Minister clarified during a groundbreaking ceremony on July 8 for the reconstruction of the 161kV Anwomaso to Kumasi transmission line that ENI’s planned maintenance will momentarily stop the gas supply, resulting in minor power disruptions.

“This Sunday, July 13, ENI will turn off its valves temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 MMscfd. It means that we are stabilising the energy sector,” he said.

The energy minister assured the public that although there may be some inconvenience, the upgrade is necessary and will bring long-term benefits by improving gas supply to the national grid.

“Because the plant will be turned off for a short period within the day for maintenance works, we are likely to experience some interruption of power. It is for a good purpose,” he added.
