Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister of Government Communications, has categorically refuted allegations of a political conspiracy to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esabaa Torkornoo.
Responding to the Chief Justice’s earlier remarks on Wednesday, 25.2025, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye told the media that President John Dramani Mahama’s actions were not motivated by any disguised political goal. The President has adhered closely to the 1992 Constitution, he emphasized, particularly Article 146, which describes the procedure for dismissing judges.
“There has not been a single violation of the Constitution in this matter; every action the President has taken has been by the book, in line with the law, and with full respect to the Chief Justice’s office,” he stated.
He went on to say that nobody has been able to identify any constitutional violations in the way the President has handled the matter.
In a press briefing, the Chief Justice expressed worries that the current removal process might be politically driven, to which Mr. Ofosu Kwakye was reacting.
“Let me be clear—there is no political agenda at all. The President took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and he is simply fulfilling that duty.”
He added that the President is compelled by law to take action in response to a petition against a public official and cannot disregard it out of personal preference.
“The Chief Justice herself swore in the President, who promised to abide by the Constitution. That is exactly what he is doing,” Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said.
He underlined that everyone, from the president to civil officials, is subject to the law and that no public authority is above it.
“we cannot have a sacred cow mentality in the way that we handle state affairs every single public official, from the President to the speaker, to the Chief Justice, to Supreme Court judges, to ministers, to all public office holders are bound by the provisions of Ghanaian law” he added.
“It is regrettable that such statements are being made, particularly in light of the President’s actions being fully transparent and compliant with the law,” the Minister added.
